My new stabilizer jacks.

As soon as I got back to the camp, I had to open the box of 4 stabilizer jacks, and put them under the trailer. I rolled out my carpet for just such occasions and crawled underneath a few inches and placed them under the metal frame in the back and front. These guy’s are 11 inches tall, fairly short, which is what I needed. They made the trailer nice and steady. Man that feels great when inside. No more rocking around like on the ocean. The two that came with the trailer were to tall for me to place them under the trailer. Basically useless. Now I am cooking with stability.

They fit perfect.

Traveling to Cedar City.

I had to drive to Cedar City yesterday for supplies. Got up made a great “cup o’Joe” and  left Red Canyon camp around 7:00 AM. A nice peaceful time to travel. There is almost no one on the roads in this part of the country. What a beautiful drive. If you plan on traveling this area, you must drive Hwy. 89. It is a scenic highway. Driving down the highway you see some of the Sevier river. A bit muddy this time of the year. There are many rivers, streams, lakes and ponds through out the state that give the fisherman lots of choices for fishing. Utah has the right stream for any skill level. And the Sevier river has fantastic fishing for the Fly fisherman.

I drove south to the Highway 14 turn, turned west on 14 and drove across Cedar Mountain headed west to Cedar. Man o’ man,  nature made a real mess. Thousands of trees and limbs strewn all over the place. All over the road, you could see where the forest service people had to clear a hell of a lot of mess to get the highway open. The river and streams are overflowing. Navajo lake is still frozen and it is June!! Unreal! Cedar Breaks National Monument is still closed! All in all, a real mess. I have not seen this much damage – ever. I drove on down the canyon and checked out another campground – Cedar Campground at about 8000 ft– fallen trees, limbs, etc. still closed. I did find a couple of campsites you could get your car into in the campground. The rest of the sites you can not drive to due to downed trees.

I got to town and got supplies at Smith’s market. Great place to shop. Prices and pretty good, considering the economy. There is also a Walmart. I go between the two.  Also if you are in Utah, there is a good store for outdoor stuff – Cal Ranch – I stopped in there and picked up a set of four trailer jack stabilizers. Oh, they are perfect. When I got back to the campsite. I opened the package of jack’s and put them under the trailer. The trailer is now a very stable little home.

It got down to 25 degrees last night. When is this winter going to stop?? At least it is going to warm up a bit today.

On to Red Canyon, UT

I left Cedar Pocket campground this morning. I drove on up to Cedar City where I stopped for supplies at Walmart. This Walmart is a good place to stay overnight while traveling. Next door to the Wal Mart is a Home Depot for those maintenance items, which I am glad is there. Smith’s Market is another good place to get supplies. I find that their prices are sometimes lower on some items. They are both close by. Well – within 2 or 3  miles of each other. I drove on up I-15 to the Hwy 20 exit. This roadway is a good route to take. It is fast and lower elevation than going over Cedar Mountain. Continue to Hwy 89, heading south through Panguitch and on to Red Canyon on Hwy 12. A very nice drive.

Yessir, that's my baby!

My new Dometic RC 4000 portable refrigerator.

I drove to Cedar City, UT yesterday (Friday). I ordered a Dometic RC 4000 refrigerator. It was ready to pick up as well as my 11 lb propane tank to go with it. Glad I did not take my Aloha trailer with me. The weather was wet. And I still have not coated the bottom of the trailer. So, camp is in Cedar Pocket campground. Great base. Weather is windy but nice. I hooked up the propane tank to the frig. Started it up and waited. This morning the sodas were almost frozen. Wow! That works great. This little unit is also 120/12 v as well as propane. Cool!

I give it thumbs up!

My new window rock guard.

I went to Bob and Cindy’s house this Sunday (Mom’s day). They restore vintage trailers. Bob made a new cool looking rock guard for my front window. He used the existing fiberglass and made it look so much better. Plus it now has hinges to hold the guard up safely. Yesterday after noon was a good test. The winds kicked up and everything worked great. Here are some shots of Bob at work.

Mice in my car.

This is an interesting story. While camping at Oak Grove campground a number of weeks ago, I picked up some hitch hikers “mice”. I hated to do it but, it is the only way to guarantee success -  mouse traps. After they got whacked I gave them all a positive feeling about what happened as I dumped them in the trash. After all, it’s not like I invited them in for a glass of wine and appetizers! I have been to AZ, UT, and back to CA. and guess what I find as I am driving back to my camp site in the dark, on a small county road, a damn mouse runs across my dashboard to my side of the car. “Holy shit” I yelled. The mouse looked at me jumped, then ran to the other side of the dashboard and down a air duct. Today I bought 12 mouse traps to make sure I have plenty in stock. I am in for the fight. I will win!!!

The tally is seven so far. How many of these little buggers are there? I know they have big families. I will keep on this until they are gone. Man, this is wild. I have now nailed one each day for three days straight. Glad I stocked up on mouse traps. Jeeze!!

Kodachrome Basin State Park

We left Cedar Pocket campground in the Virgin River Gorge Arizona strip area. Drove North on I-15 to the State road 9 going to Hurricane. I mentioned to Jeanne and Joe that we will be traveling through Hillsdale and Colorado City, two towns bordering Arizona and Utah. Polygamy towns. Weird to see homes unfinished, looks like going on 30 years or more. Certain Mormon groups  are pros at ripping off the government. They live on welfare and we, the taxpayers foot the bill for them. And they are conservative’s. Yes sir, they are republicans. Enough talk about weird folks.

Driving on was Fredonia, AZ. Stopped at a Sinclair gas station, circa 1930’s. Very cool old gas station. The kicker is that when you go inside the tiny store they have a refrigerator that has a really good selection of beers. Most importantly “Arrogant Bastard Ale”, which they have in stock. On to lunch at a neat little Mexican restaurant in Kanab, UT. Escobar’s is a neat little place that just puts out great food. Joe and Jeanne loved it as much as I. Drove up highway 89 (long valley). Great scenic drive. Got a little rain on the way. I hate rain for my little trailer. I have not coated the bottom of the trailer with Thompsons Water Seal yet. I have to replace two bottom panels at the rear of the trailer.  Holy crap! I know, it is an old trailer, so it needs to be kept in shape. Like us all eh! Talked to Cindy and Bob, the restorers and they can do the work. Cool.

We drove on up to Red Canyon, on Hwy 12. Another great highway. I showed them the Red Canyon campground. It looked like it might be open. As we drove across the upper plateau of the Bryce Canyon area, it started to snow. Holy crap, I don’t want that. Got past that and headed on down to Tropic. The hill was bloody steep. I thought yikes, holy shit and all sorts or other stuff. I could just envision my trailer right next to me, flying down the hill, past me. Then all was fine once at the bottom.

Kodachrome Basin State Park is a Wow! A really neat place to camp as you can see. Only 27 sites. So it is best to reserve. We did, and were glad we did so. For the most part, the site’s are nicely separated. Showers are included with the fee. I met three other small trailer travelers. Their trailers were, a 1994 Bigfoot which looked to be about 16 or 17 feet, 1978 Boles about 13 feet, 2010 17 foot Casita. We all love our small trailers. Roger that! The nearest cell/internet service is in Tropic about 15 miles or so. That really sucks. But all in all a great place to camp.

View from Grand Parade trail.

Trailer made in Canada.

Jeanne, boogie and I took a walk of the Grande Parade trail. Beautiful hike. Rate is easy. About 2 miles if you include the nature walk, which is a must. But, the best hike in the park that you can walk to from your campsite is in my opinion is the Angle’s Palace trail. Wow!

My site

Wine Ahh, a nice evening get together.

Heading to Zion

After leaving Las Vegas having sold the teardrop. I am traveling up the I-15 to Utah. Well, who should pass me by – Ed and Theresa towing their new teardrop (my teardrop), waving and smiling as they pass. Very cool!! I go to Zion National Park and it is full. Oh crap! Now what. There is nothing. So I go back to Cedar Pocket campground in the Virgin River Gorge area. Cool place to stay. There, I met up with Joe and Jeanne Hitchman. My friends from Oak Grove. We are hanging out at Cedar Pockets because it is spring break and Easter week. This otherwise empty campground is now pretty full because of the holiday and all. It is neat to see so many people enjoy this recreation area. There are trails to the Virgin River to play in and many other trips around the area. Mesquite is 20 minutes south and St. George is 20 minutes north for any supplies or gambling you might want to do.

Camping with my Aloha

Full moon. Wow!

The wind can get pretty hairy. One night I thought I was going to blow away and end up in Kansas with Toto. Holy crap. That was one hell of a night rocking and rolling. I moved to the center of the campground the next day. Much better place to camp than the edge of the canyon.

Sunday we will be heading to Kodachrome Basin State Park. It is just east of Bryce Canyon which is still to cold up there. Kocachrome is a lower elevation campground. More to come as we get there and discover the area. Very cool.

Calico Ghost Town camping and Dutch Oven cooking

calico ghost town camping#1

Wow, I had a blast camping with the Las Vegas Dutch Oven cooking society at Calico Ghost Town in San Bernardino county, CA. Near Barstow off of I-15. I got there late. But it was still a lot of fun. Everyone was busy cooking up some fabulous meals. Each was given a different ingredient to use in their dish. A la “Chopped” on the Food Network.  You can view some of the wonderful food in the photos. Be aware – the campground is less than stellar by a long shot. But – the companionship and the food were wonderful. A fun trip not soon forgotten.  Plus Calico Ghost Town is a hoot. You must see at least once in your lifetime.

The next time we get together, I hope I am on time and can cook what I have been wanting to cook for a while now. This weird weather. What a winter it has been. Oh, I forgot, it  is spring!
